Japan: Dystopia and the Uncanny Cityscapes in Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira

Japan: Dystopia and the Uncanny Cityscapes in Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s Akira

I wrote this essay for my Masters in Art, Aesthetics and Cultural institutions, it got a good pass but was not marked very highly due to the essay not being very philosophically based and more closely resembling film criticism. Despite this I am fairly happy with it. The essay explores the concept of the ‘Uncanny’ and how it is applied to Akira, along with mother imagery and reincarnation.
