I’ve been working on some new designs recently for screen printed back patches. My screen printer Carry On Screaming suggested I try designing some to be printed on white fabric as I’m a bit of a stickler for lovely gothic black.

Since both Carry On Screaming and myself are cat worshipers, it was also suggested that a tuxedo cat would look pretty awesome. it just so happened that this young chappie had just wandered into our lives so obviously that’s fate right?

Initially I had an idea of a cat scratching a back open but I just couldn’t work the sketch right, the composition always felt weird.

Having ideas but also simultaneously having art block is infuriating, it’s like the ideas are there but the body won’t comply. I sat and doodled this while listening to an audiobook (Stephen King’s IT, still scary AF) and drawing all the foliage and getting a bit sketchy felt very soothing. My favourite memories of all my cats has been while their sunbathing.

Will it end up as a back patch? Maybe! But drawing with an intention in mind has been fun, maybe it won’t end up being printed but if it does maybe there’ll be a part 2 on here with the finished print.
